    Good Day,

I hope this finds you well. I am writing to you on behalf of the Montana State University Department of Earth Sciences Student Colloquium. The student colloquium is an event arranged by graduate students in the department at which all level of students from MSU may present their research. It is a one-day event that will include student presentations, mock interviews, a GIS panel, poster session and social hour, plated dinner and keynote speaker address. The colloquium is entirely run by donations and volunteer work. I am writing to you to respectfully solicit funding and/or participation for our 2015 event. Any amount would help, and we would be sure to advertise your kind donation. Would you be able to assist with this year’s event?

Specifically regarding the GIS panel, Mr. Stuart Challender, faculty in the Earth Sciences department at MSU, suggested I reach out to you for participants on the panel. The panel will be from 3:30pm-5pm on the day of the event, May1st, 2015.

In addition, the poster session will include many posters that have GIS incorporated research. We were thinking of having a poster contest with those student presenters that choose to use GIS as part of their analysis. Would a representative of MAGIP be willing to act as judge for this?

Our committee this year is comprised of mainly geographers, so it would be of special importance to have the participation of your fine organization! The committee co-chair, Danika Holmes is a recent member of MAGIP.

    Kind Regards,

    James Benes

    What support should we offer?

Is anyone available May 1 to sit on the panel from 3:30 - 5?

Or to judge the poster contest?

In 2013 we provided: Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (1st - A check for $100 and paid registration to present at an upcoming MAGIP event, 2nd - $50 & MAGIP membership, 3rd - $25) All receive a one-year MAGIP membership and free entry to the poster session at the MAGIP Spring Meeting

This sounds like a great event and I think we should support it any way we can. This could also be a good opportunity to recruit non-board members for volunteering.  Seems like the Education Committee should be involved too.  It would also be a good opportunity to recruit a Student Ambassador if we don't already have one by then.
