The Montana Natural Heritage Program (http://mtnhp.org), operated by The University of Montana with the Montana State Library, is part of a hemispheric network of over 80 programs that maintain and disseminate data on the distribution, status and management of vulnerable species and important habitats. NHP is part of the Montana Natural Resource Information System (NRIS), a nationally-recognized leader in using emerging GIS and Web technologies to integrate and distribute spatially referenced data on natural resources (http://nris.mt.gov/). The main MT NHP offices are located in Helena, Montana, with a smaller office on the campus of the University of Montana in Missoula. This Ecologist position is based in Helena, MT.
The Montana Natural Heritage Program (NHP) is recruiting an Ecology GIS Project Manager to oversee the production and quality assurance/quality control of National Wetland Inventory (NWI) mapping currently being undertaken by a staff of 5-7 ecologist/photo interpreters. S/he will also take the lead on developing and managing ecological classification and analysis projects using remote sensing and GIS technologies, and for making data available to support effective resource management and conservation. This position requires a strong background in database management and GIS and demonstrated experience managing large or complex GIS production projects, with well-developed photointerpretation, analysis, statistical, and geodatabase skills. Training or experience in the natural sciences is essential. S/he will have significant responsibility for quality assurance and quality control of wetland mapping projects, and may accompany field crews on specific surveys to gain familiarity with the resources being mapped, but field work is not a significant component of this position.
This position is a one-year, full-time (40 hours/week average) position with benefits, with the possibility of annual renewal based on funding. The Ecology GIS Project Manager works closely with other staff ecologists, the botanist, database specialists, and public and private partners to document the distribution, dynamics and management of Montana’s ecological diversity. S/he is supervised by the Senior Ecologist, and may lead work teams or supervise interns, student employees or volunteers as appropriate. Position requies a current driver's license and a clean driving record.
The starting salary range for this position is $42,000 to $44,000 per year depending on experience. The University of Montana offers an excellent benefit package, including generous health insurance benefits for the employee and his/her dependents, including domestic partners.
