Introduction to ArcGIS 9.2
- Presenter: Jim Larson, Stillwater County GIS
- Learn about ESRI's newest software version
Using Remote Sensing for Land Management Decisions
- Presenter: Van Shelhamer, GeoEssentials, Inc.
- Ever wonder how remote sensed images, collected by satellites or airplanes, can be used for
making land management decisions or determine vegetative conditions on large land areas? If
so, this hands-on-workshop is for you. A brief explanation of the principles of remote
sensing and how plants interact with the electromagnetic spectrum will be presented.
Participants will have hands-on experience in measuring light reflectance values of various
plants to further their understanding of the concepts of remote sensing. A producer will
present how he uses images and geospatial technologies on his operation. Participants will be
at the computer using MultiSpec software, provided free to participants, to examine images of
Eastern Montana, determine visual differences in the images, experiment with false coloring,
and identify different vegetative areas. Vegetation classification of an image can be used for
management decisions and has application in a number of agricultural situations. Participants
will learn how to access LandSat satellite and other images for your area of interest from
MontanaView.
Spatial Data Modeling and Database Design with the GeoDatabase
- Presenter: Stuart Challender, Montana State University
ESRI Staff
- This workshop will introduce data modeling concepts in the context of a database design
process resulting in a logical database schema that can be implemented in the ESRI GeoDatabase.
Concepts are intended to build the knowledge base and skills necessary to develop spatial
databases that adequately support the intended applications. This is important for people
developing GIS applications that address local issues as well as providing important background
information for people interested in participating in the Montana Land Information Advisory
Council (MLIAC) grant initiatives or statewide database development by providing standardized
data to Montana Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) framework efforts.
This workshop will benefit people new to data modeling as well as those who are looking to
upgrade their data models to the GeoDatabase. Specific topics include:
- Spatial data models
- Relational database concepts
- Database design process
- Building a database schema (specifications for the database)
- Examples of data models
- Implementing the schema in the Geodatabase (hands on)
- Documentation / metadata
